How Much is a “Woman in Heat” Worth to You?

Turns out men think women who are “in heat” (ovulating and at the peak of their fertility cycles) are worth double what menstruating women (at the lowest point of their fertility cycles) are worth!
A new study conducted by evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque found that men “tipped” lap-dancing women an average of $70 per hour while they were ovulating verses only $35 an hour when they were menstruating. Of course, the men had no conscious idea of their tell-tale tipping behavior since the women showed no outwardly overt signs of their cycle phase. (It’s not like they lap-danced with pads and tampon strings showing for goodness sake!)
So aside from the women actually telling their horny male clients they were highly fertile and ready to make babies, how in the world did the men know?!
Sure, some psychologists and biologists were quick to jump to the “heightened pheromone” effect, implying the men unconsciously picked up a certain alluring scent given off by the ovulating women and unknowingly responded to that. And although at first glance this may seem like a satisfactory answer, a more logical part of my brain asks - “Really? Men’s noses are amazing enough to detect slight variations in a woman’s scent in the midst of other sweaty bodies, cigarette smoke, and after consuming at least three Budweisers?!” If that were truly the case, I think the study should have focused on that instead!
A much more likely and intuitive answer comes from evolutionary psychologist Karl Grammer of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Urban Ethology in Viennais. He believes women who are ovulating and have higher levels of estrogens move their bodies and behave differently - essentially more sexually provocative. Other studies have supported similar evidence, finding that women dress more provocatively during their highly fertile days than at any other time of the month. Instead of using their noses, men are using their eyes (what a surprise!), and paying women who are “acting and dancing” sexier more money (again, a surprise!)
Women Act Sexier When They Feel Sexy? Who Knew?!
Although it’s surprising to see the actual hard numbers ($70 vs. $35) evidencing the unconscious changes many women experience during those few days of ovulation, I’m sure the women readers out there won’t find these facts shocking in the least. Most women know there are certain times of the month when they are more aroused, more likely to initiate sex, more likely give into the whims of their erotically adventurous selves…And that time is usually NOT during their “periods.”
Bloating, cramps, general malaise, that “oh-my-god-I’m-so-fat-and-unattractive” feeling just does not resonate well with trying to be glamorously sexy. Instead of “Mmmm sure Honey, I’ll give you a lap dance!” we’re more likely to yell, “Are you crazy? Does our living room look like a cheap bar to you?!” - Even if we otherwise think very highly of those beautiful lap dancing girls and mean them no disrespect.
It’s no wonder menstruating lap-dancers probably do half-assed jobs and get a measly $35 an hour! They’re probably in horrible moods most of the time and men - even half drunk men - will certainly pick up on that. No pheromone sniffing noses necessary!
(Then again some women do experience extra-horniness during their periods because of the wacky hormone mix, but the above list of negatives tends to take over that horniness anyway. Yes, women can feel horny and unattractive at the same time…)
The Larger Implications of This Lap-Dancing Study
I guess the main conclusion is that women really do give off certain Come Hither Vibes when they’re biologically primed to continue the species, and men can read those vibes whether they know it or not. So the next time your woman looks unusually appealing to you, it’s probably because she’s highly fertile - something to keep in mind if you’re thinking (or not thinking!) about having a child.
And Ladies - your sexuality is worth Double to your man mid-way between periods. Surely you can think of some ways to use that to your wicked advantage…right?
